It was 40 degrees when I came back from 8am mass, and our home was nice and toasty. I was feeling very warm, but thirsty and dying to grab an iced cold soda or any sweet drink but I remembered that I have frozen iced cubes from Mackenzie’s Raspberry Moroccan Iced Tea. So… I started slicing lemon, lime, and a small piece of Jalapeño and as I was getting ready to gulp it down, I realized I could post this on my blog! So after dashing to the very cold garden and grabbing 2 mint sprigs, everything was ready; voila! It’s really refreshing! Life is good! Thank you Jesus!
I was really warm after having some piping hot Pumpkin Soup with a few slices of baguette and the roasted garlic was just inside the roaster in front of me; I sliced up the baguette and took some roasted garlic, removed the thin covering and smeared it on top of the baguette and applied a thin creamy layer of Laughing Cow soft cheese on top. Heavenly! I felt toasty, but I needed a drink pronto. Anyway, you can either use filtered water or club soda or you can make your own sugar syrup for this featured drink from scratch. But I personally added Mackenzie’s Flavored Honey Syrup and Flavored Iced Cubes. So let’s prepare this healthy and simple refreshing drinks.
Mackenzie’s Healthy Honey Syrup
In a medium saucepan over high heat, bring 4 cups of water to boil. Whisk in 3/4 cups raw honey until melted (you can use only 1/2 cup of honey for a more tart flavor).
The classic ratio is 1:1, 1 part water to 1 part sugar. You can flavor your syrup in many ways with cinnamon sticks and cloves or pieces of ginger and lemon zest or lemon/lime/orange and grapefruit zest, depending on how strong you want it to be. Bring 2 cups of water to boil then whisk 2 cups brown or white sugar and turn the stove to low once the mixture starts to simmer and continue simmering until the fluid becomes syrupy according to your preference. You can add it to your refreshing water drink, cool down the left-overs and refrigerate for later use.
Mackenzie’s Flavored Iced Cubes
For each flavor you will need a liter of plain soda or carbonated water or plain filtered water.
1. Grapefruit Flavor (1 grapefruit + 2 Tbsp. honey) – Please take note that anybody on any anti-hypertensive medications cannot drink grapefruit for adverse cardiac effects!
2. Lemon lime flavor (2 limes+ 2 lemons + 3 tbsp. honey)
3. Orange Flavor ( 3 oranges + 2 Tbsp. honey)
Juice the citrus fruit, pour in a blender or juicer, add the honey and turn on the machine, turn off and pour into ice cube trays; you’re good to go. Just throw in the flavored iced cubes in your filtered water or carbonated water drink.
Another healthy and refreshing drink, thanks to Mackenzie for the original recipe from Peaches. Sarap and cheers!
